When people ask me who my favorite author is, I usually look at them like they are insane and ask them how they expect me to choose.  Seriously.  Then they say give me your top 5.  This gets the standard answer of Frank Herbert, Anne Bishop, Jim Butcher, Tamora Pierce and Poppy Z.
